Animated gif files are, for all intents and purposes, the little brother of Flash animations. Most ad banners that change messages or use motion to display themselves are animated gifs. Typically they are smaller in size and duration, with no sound or music, no interactivity and generally less complex; therefore easier to create. Animated gifs are most widely used to add small moving elements or certain effects to individual elements on a web page in an attempt to dress things up a little and make surfing a little more interesting. Many of the 'moving' elements on this site, the gleam across my logo, the screenprint squeegee, and the spinning web icon and title bar above are all animated gifs
